The promise of power

Today is Pentecost Sunday, 50 days (7 Sundays) since Easter. It's widely recognized as the birth of the Christian Church.

Here's the setting during Jesus' time on earth: The disciples have witnessed the crucifixion of their Messiah, His rising from the dead, and then His physical presence with them for 40 more days.

Just as His closest followers were getting over His death and His surprise resurrection, Jesus told them He had to go away (again). This time, He told them to stay nearby; He was going to leave them with a promise from His Father. The promise was the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:4-5)

Just before Jesus ascended into Heaven, He said the following to His disciples,

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
Acts 1:8

Of course, Jesus' disciples were confused (I know I would be!), so they went to the upper room . . . and prayed. (Acts 1:13-14) Ten days later, the Holy Spirit entered their lives with a rush of wind and tongues of fire.

When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all [120+ people, see Act 1:15] together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 2:1-4

For me, Pentecost is a reminder that the Holy Spirit lives within every Believer. He brings us power, comfort, guidance, and a constant, personal connection with God. If you've accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, then the Holy Spirit is working in and through you already.

Sadly, I think the Holy Spirit doesn't get the recognition He deserves from us. I mean, we all know to pray to God our Father, and we all know who Jesus is, but can we really say we know much about the Holy Spirit?

I've been reading Spurgeon on the Holy Spirit, a fascinating book that brings so many Biblical facts about the Holy Spirit into context for me.

Just sayin'. . . I was today years old when I learned that the Holy Spirit's purpose is to glorify God.

Since God created us to glorify Himself and to abide with Him, I'd venture to say that we all need the Holy Spirit to live within us. Are you sure the Holy Spirit lives within you?

If not, pray the Romans 10:9 verse below and acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the only One who can save you from the penalty, the power, and eventually, the presence of sin. The Holy Spirit will immediately begin working in and through you.

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9

Reader, I encourage you to open your Bible and read the Book of John this week. If you're not yet a Christian, see if your view of Jesus changes. If you are already a Believer, then your faith and your personal relationship with God will be renewed. Hit reply and send me any questions you have. I'd love to help you learn more about Jesus!

Blessings,

As we enter this season of giving, what do you give someone who has everything? We typically think about this question in the context of well-off parents or grandparents who don't need one more material thing. But I challenge you today to think about the question in the context of God. What do you give Someone who has everything? God literally owns everything. He gave us everything that we have—life, material items, talents, spiritual gifts, even people. When someone gives me a gift, I am...

Two weeks ago, I asked, Which Bible verse are you praying today? Many thanks to everyone in our Pray God's Way family who responded. I promised that I'd share the list of verses that our community is praying. I encourage you to meditate on each verse, ask the Holy Spirit to show you what God wants you to know about the verse and how to apply it to your life. You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.Isaiah 26:3 Keep yourselves in the love of God,...

This has been quite a week. It's heavy. I feel like there has been a tectonic cultural shift in our world, and I'm still trying to catch my breath. The world literally shook the day Charlie Kirk was assassinated. (There was an earthquake in Utah on Wednesday, September 10th a couple of hours after his death was confirmed.) If you're not familiar with Charlie Kirk, you can check out his videos via the Turning Point USA, Turning Point USA Faith, and Charlie Kirk Show websites. Please listen to...
